THE NORTHBOUND RITUAL

You’ve earned the respite. Take it.

Nobody hands you an hour. Not your job, not your phone, not your kids’ schedule. A cigar is thirty to sixty minutes you can’t rush or scroll through. Here’s how to spend it.

HOW IT GOES

No feed. No noise. No rush.

There are no rules here, just a few things that make the first time better.

Hands using a cutter on a Bound cigar over an ashtray

Cut clean.

Take off just the cap, the little dome of leaf at the closed end. About the width of a nickel. One clean, committed snip.

Hands holding a lit Bound cigar and a cutter

Light it slow.

Hold the foot above the flame, not in it, and rotate while the edge toasts. Gentle puffs until the whole face glows even.

Stay a while.

Don’t inhale; taste it and let it go. Smoke slower than you think you should. The time is the point.

Sit closer. Stay longer.

WHAT TO DRINK

Coffee in the morning. Water at night.

There are no rules here, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. These are just what we reach for.

Two cups of coffee side by side on a weathered rail

Black coffee

Morning cigars and black coffee belong together. Both are bitter, both are better slow.

Two glasses of water on a wooden bar

Sparkling water

Resets your palate between draws and keeps the whole hour clear headed.

Nothing at all

A cigar and a porch is a complete set. Watch the ash hold and you will see why.

BETWEEN SESSIONS

Keep them happy.

No humidor required. A zip-top bag or airtight container with a two-way humidity pack (69% is the standard) will hold your cigars just fine for months.

Can’t finish one? Let it go out on its own and enjoy what it gave you. It won’t taste the same tomorrow.

What to drink? Whatever you like. We reach for black coffee in the morning and sparkling water at night. Some of our favorite cigars were paired with nothing but a quiet porch.

Two chairs. One hour.
